REVIEW
Starlight Productions Beauty and the Beast – The pantomime
Director – Steve Volke
Choreographer - Irene Volke
Performed at The Mike Fry Theatre, Belfairs School on Saturday 14 January 2012 at 7.30pm
Starlight Production’s annual pantomime is always fun to watch, the cast have a great time and this shows. The choice of Beauty and the Beast as their panto was quite a brave one, given that the Disney Musical is being performed all over the place at the moment. The script for this production was excellent, with some good, up to the minute references and a number of panto ‘gags’ which help to make up the fun.
All the cast were good in their parts, Hannah Spurling made a great, and feisty, Belle and Director Steve Volke playing the Prince/Beast with great style. Matthew Burman (Dame Dolly) and his (her?) two sidekicks Annette Mason-Utton (Chardonnay) and Michelle Matthew (Lambrini) brought some great comic moments. Cara Riley (Countess Cruella) was suitably evil and Teresa Young (Fairy Rose) kept the action moving with a nicely developed French accent which was still perfectly understandable (and that’s not as easy to achieve as you might think!). Shane Rose (Jean-Claude) Melanie Brown (Jacques) and Robin Winder (Papa) completed the Principal line-up.
The singing was excellent in this show and the small chorus gave some strong performances. Irene Volke’s choreography was quite challenging and it was a pleasure to see the younger members of the cast perform to such a high standard. The costumes were simple but excellent and Belles dresses were beautiful. Considering that this was their first production at this theatre, the scenery changes worked well. I do like Starlight’s use of projected backgrounds and the little animated touches were delightful.
Starlight and their members continue to grow and develop their performing skills and their audiences clearly enjoy the productions. I always look forward to their pantomime and I was not disappointed..
